Big news comes down to us from CES 2010. Asus will be releasing the UL30JT, which will sport the exact same chassis as the UL30VT but will house an ultra low voltage i7 quad core processor instead. It is reported that the UL30JT will have the same 12 hour battery life of the UL30VT and will also have a Nvidia 310M, which should perform identically (if not a little better) than the 210M. It’s crazy to think that they are stuff quad threaded dual core processors in laptops so small these days. Mind blowing. If you were thinking about buying a UL30VT, it might be a good idea to wait a month or two for this bad boy to come out. But then again, new technology is always coming out so you might be waiting forever.

Should i get a UL80VT or the UL80Jt….In Nvidia.com they said that Nvidia G210M has 10x the gaming performance while the new G310M has only 5x the gaming performance… so im sticking with the UL80VT
This i7 is a dual core/quad thread processor. Still super performance, and frankly more than most people ever need.
The UL30JT’s Nvidia 310M is probably only listed at 5x performance because the 5x indicates how many times better than integrated graphics the card is. The reason the 310M is only 5x is because they will be coming out with newer/better integrated graphics so it won’t be as many times better compared to the “Newer” integrated stuff. It’s kind of confusing, but the 310M most likely will be simply a reiteration of the 210M with nearly exactly the same performance.
@Joe Thanks for the heads up. I edited the article to reflect that.
What a dilemma this fine new machine has put me in. I was 100% set on the UL30VT-A1 and now this thing comes out.
What to do? I kind of need a notebook for school right now but I can certainly manage for another month or two. The uncertainty is what really makes this difficult. We don’t know price or a solid release date. If it is more than $850 I probably can’t get it anyway.
I hate how I will be checking for new info every day until we hear something from Asus. Please don’t keep us waiting too long!
@Casey
I am a student too and was thinking the same thing but I couldn’t wait until the JT was released.
I’m very sure the Vt will suffice for you…but if you can wait then wait.
Oh dear! Same situation!
School starts August, yet I have to decide between the HP Envy 15 or the Macbook Pro 15. The latter gets refreshed in September!
i had sold my laptop to buy ul30vt.. but what?? ul30jt.. oh no!! i must use laptop cauz i have no desktop. wait or buy ul30vt?? will be much perfomance difference between ul30vt and ul30jt??
If you can afford to wait, definitely wait. It’ll perform significantly better. The UL30VT is still a good buy, however, and will fulfill most people’s needs just fine. Keep in mind that the UL30JT’s release means a drop in price for the UL30VT and that the UL30JT will cost more.
Hi guys,
Have you got any idea as to how much the JT will retail for? Are we talking $100 more than the VT, or will it rise above that?
Thanks
that’s great article, i’m googling and finding your post useful for me, and i will bookmark this, and thank you for sharing!
I pre-ordered the Asus UL80VT-A2 and then canceled that order to get the Asus K42JR-A1 for the increased performance and I decided that I could do fine with the 3 hours of battery to get the dedicated GPU. Now I read in the comments that they are coming out with an Asus UL80J and I can’t find out anything about this model out there and the specs on it. an you you give me any help? I looked at the Asus website and can’t find anything about new models not released.
that 5x 10x is marketing BS. the 310 is a 210 revamped (it apparently has 1 gig memory compared to the 512 of the 210).
ul30vt is still an excellent machine. the jt has some advantages. AFAIK, no manual overclock and no manual graphics selection (like the new, posh Sonys). I wouldn’t let the graphics ‘upgrade’ get in the way. But the CPU seems more capable, although for light gaming I don’t think it matters. The GPU will always be the bottleneck anyway, and the 310M is hardly a vastly superior offering.
If you need a laptop now, get the vt with the 5600mah batteries. If you can wait a month or two, keep your cash and start saving some more for the jt.
… I just wish the vt / jt will get release in Europe sooner rather than later. What’s up with that, Asus?
Actually the i7 that will be in the ul30jt is a dual core, not a quad core.
Same deal here. I was about to buy the UL30Vt tomorrow, but I’ve read the CES news of the upcoming Jt model. The GPU change won’t matter much tough. GF310M just doesn’t have the horse power to render all of those HD textures that you put into the ram. Even if it could handle the textures, your games will suffer on lack of high-end shaders, so basically they will look the same.
As for the CPU… (both 4MB L3, 800MT/s DDR3, 18Watt TDP)
i7-620UM: core base: 1,06Ghz
Turbo Boost: Single core to 2,13Ghz, Dualcore to 1,73 Ghz
i7-640UM: core base: 1,20Ghz
Turbo Boost: Single core to 2,26Ghz, Dualcore to 1,86 Ghz
And the current one (3MB L3, 800Mhz, 10Watt TDP)
C2Duo SU7300: core base: 1,4Ghz
Turbo boost: ‘both’ 1,73Ghz
So you’ll see the noticable 400Mhz on turbo, but the question remains how will it impact the battery (although the current model looses like 40min-1h of battery time when on turbo). Surely 400Mhz isn’t a step-up to the next genre of processors, it just a little boost. You won’t be rendering 3D graphics with this one for sure. And battery life is bound to be lesser from the Vt model.
For me the biggest gripe is the display. I didn’t yet see this laptop in person, so I’m only limited to the reviews online, but I _hope_ that the Jt will have a better one, because I want to do some Photoshop work on it from time to time. If not, I’ll just buy the Vt.
As I read in several other forums, the UL30Jt probably wont be released until mid summer or later, and Asus will wait till the ul30Vt and the U30Jc runs out. However I think Jt will be released around Sept.
